I am pleased to report this morning (6/13/17) that the NYS Board of Regents modified existing regulations to allow 7-8 students in Districts with K-8 configurations to participate in JV/Varsity sports at high schools in which they have multiple tuition contracts.
This arduous process began in March of 2016. Today, Greenwood Lake along with all other K-8 Districts were victorious; despite opposition voiced from the NYS Athletic Association and Section 9 against this regulatory change.
I am grateful to the Greenwood Lake Board of Education for allowing GWL to lead the way in this advocacy effort. I am also thankful to the other k-8 Districts across the State for supporting our students and theirs. I would like to acknowledge our Athletic Director Chris Radon for helping craft our position. I also would like to thank our legal counsel, Bob Cohen of Lamb & Barnosky, LLP, for his expertise throughout this process.
And finally, this would not have been possible without the support of Commissioner Elia and Regent Judith Johnson. Their advocacy for all K-8 Districts in the State was at the forefront of this decision.
Our next steps include drafting and approving Board policies with Chester and Warwick so that our students who qualify may try out for JV/Varsity teams this fall. I anticipate the District will be prepared to update our community by mid-July.
