GWLUFSD provides daily, systematic Pre K–8 literacy instruction grounded in the Science of Reading. Instruction is built around the “Big 6” components—Oral Language, Phonological Awareness, Phonics, Fluency, Vocabulary, and Comprehension—to develop strong foundational and advanced literacy skills. Teaching is explicit, structured, and data-driven, using whole-group, small-group, and individualized instruction to meet student needs. Writing and grammar are integrated into daily literacy instruction, supporting students in developing clear, purposeful communication across content areas. This comprehensive approach ensures students are equipped with the skills necessary for proficient reading, critical thinking, and effective written expression.
