Distraction-Free Schools Policy

Dear GWL Staff and Families,

Recent legislation, signed by Governor Kathy Hochul requires school districts across New York to implement a ban on student access to personal internet-enabled communication devices, including smartphones, tablets and smartwatches, during the school day.

Greenwood Lake UFSD has drafted a new policy that aligns with the new Distraction-Free Schools Law and supports our shared commitment to creating safe, focused and engaging learning environments.  It is attached to this message for your review. A general overview of its contents:

·      Bell to bell ban: Start of instructional school day to the end of the instructional school day

o   Exceptions for certain circumstances, outlined in policy (medical, etc)

·      Phones must be stored away / not seen

·      Students and Parents can communicate through the school’s main office

·      Progressive discipline for violations of the policy (return to student, return to parent; consequences including detention, ISS, etc)

·     Policy includes staff, when students are present, with some exceptions

Prior to formal adoption of the policy, the District is seeking feedback from both staff and families. Please read the attached policy, then you are invited to share any questions, suggestions, or concerns you may have. You can email your feedback by Friday, August 1st to: shadden@gwlufsd.org ; it will be shared with the Board of Education’s Policy Committee for their review prior to Board adoption.

Sincerely,

Supt. Hadden
