WHAT IS OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY?

OT is a health care profession that focuses on improving a person's ability to function their every day " occupations." Occupational Therapists have training in physical disabilities, child development, neurology, psychology and sociology.  OT's work in a variety of settings and with a diverse population of people and children who need to improve their independence in everyday tasks or activities. OT's work in hospitals, schools, nursing homes and health care settings.

In a school setting, OT is part of the Special Education and 504 Accommodation team.  Students who receive OT typically require support or modifications in order to participate in the classroom and school setting successfully.  In the school setting OT often looks FUN, as students work to strengthen fine motor skills, balance, core control, coordination, visual skills and sensory processing skills. Developmentally appropriate fun activities are specifically selected to address a student's goals and to meet a particular need.  Fun activities are meaningful, motivating and engaging.
